2026 KTM 690 SMC R: The Street-Supermoto King Returns Stronger
The 2026 KTM 690 SMC R combines the sharp reflexes of a competition supermoto with the equipment required for everyday street riding. Its updated LC4 engine, adjustable WP suspension, powerful Brembo brakes, and expanded electronic package make it one of the most focused single-cylinder motorcycles available.
Whether carving through tight back roads, commuting across town, or spending a day at the track, the 690 SMC R is built to deliver lightweight handling and immediate power.
Updated 692.7cc LC4 Engine
At the center of the 2026 KTM 690 SMC R is KTM’s latest-generation LC4 engine. This liquid-cooled, 692.7cc single-cylinder powerplant produces a claimed 79 PS, equivalent to approximately 78 horsepower, along with 73 Nm of torque.
For 2026, KTM revised several internal and external components, including the crankcase, clutch cover, stator cover, and oil-delivery system. The result is a more powerful and refined version of KTM’s established big-bore single.
A six-speed transmission gives the rider enough flexibility for tight urban environments, winding roads, and higher-speed riding. The slipper clutch helps reduce rear-wheel instability during aggressive downshifts.
Lightweight Supermoto Chassis
The 690 SMC R uses a chrome-molybdenum-steel trellis frame engineered to balance torsional rigidity with controlled longitudinal flexibility. KTM increased frame stiffness for the latest generation while retaining enough flex to help the motorcycle remain composed over imperfect pavement.
Its cast-aluminum swingarm uses a linkage-mounted rear shock, helping provide progressive suspension response under acceleration and through rough corners.
The motorcycle’s slim bodywork and centralized mass make it easy to transition quickly from one side to the other. Its riding position also gives the rider plenty of leverage over the front wheel.
Fully Adjustable WP Suspension
KTM equips the 2026 690 SMC R with premium WP APEX suspension at both ends.
The 48mm WP APEX inverted fork uses separate damping functions, with compression adjustment on the left and rebound adjustment on the right. Each fork leg provides 30 clicks of external adjustment.
At the rear, a linkage-mounted WP APEX shock offers comprehensive adjustability, including rebound and both high- and low-speed compression settings. This allows the motorcycle to be configured for street riding, aggressive back-road use, or track conditions.
Brembo Braking Performance
The front braking system features a Brembo M4.32 monoblock caliper working with a 320mm disc. At the rear, a 240mm disc provides additional control and helps support traditional supermoto riding techniques.
Cornering-sensitive ABS helps manage braking when the motorcycle is leaned over. An available Sport ABS setting allows later intervention and reduces rear-wheel lift control, giving experienced riders greater freedom under hard braking.
Advanced Rider Technology
The 2026 model receives a 4.2-inch color TFT display with a compact interface designed specifically for the 690 SMC R. The bonded-glass screen uses anti-glare treatments to improve visibility in changing light conditions.
Available connectivity functions include:
- Turn-by-turn navigation
- Music control
- Incoming-call information
- Ride-mode selection
- USB device charging
An optional Track Mode expands the motorcycle’s adjustable performance settings. Depending on equipment and market availability, these functions can include launch control, adjustable rear-wheel slip, anti-wheelie control, and motor-slip regulation.
LED headlights, taillights, and turn signals provide modern visibility while complementing the motorcycle’s angular bodywork.
Purpose-Built Supermoto Ergonomics
The 690 SMC R places the rider in an upright, commanding position. Its narrow center section makes it easier to move around the motorcycle, while the wide handlebar provides substantial steering leverage.
The grippy seat cover is designed to hold the rider in place while still allowing rapid position changes. Short-profile footpegs maximize cornering clearance, and removable rubber inserts can reduce vibration during longer street rides.
The 35-inch seat height reinforces the bike’s competition-inspired character. Shorter riders may find it tall, but the motorcycle’s narrow profile can make reaching the ground easier than the seat-height measurement suggests.

Who Is the 2026 KTM 690 SMC R For?
The 690 SMC R is designed for experienced riders who value handling, acceleration, and rider involvement more than wind protection or long-distance comfort. It is especially well suited to tight roads, urban riding, and track environments where its low mass and strong single-cylinder power can be fully appreciated.
Its tall seat, firm riding position, and aggressive throttle response may make it less approachable for new riders. For the right rider, however, those same qualities are central to its appeal.
Final Thoughts
The 2026 KTM 690 SMC R remains one of the purest street-legal supermotos on the market. Its combination of nearly 78 horsepower, responsive chassis geometry, adjustable WP suspension, Brembo brakes, and modern electronic controls delivers a riding experience that few conventional street motorcycles can duplicate.
